  • This painting was inspired by the warm, and hot colours and cultures of the Mediterranean. Zahra spent many years living in Southern Europe and fell in love with the warmth of the people, cuisine and environment. Here she pays homage to one of the happiest times of her life. Inspired by the great Dutch Masters Vanitas paintings. Aspects maintained the table cloth, parts of the flowers, fruit basket and fruit, and reflection. The Cirle of Life looks at the idea of birth, youth maturity and death. the clock in the background signals the passing of time with the hour of three being shown. This is the time where the afternoon leads to early evening, the light of life is disappearing. The butterfly is part of the birth and change to flowering or coming of age. The colours have the vibrancy of youth. The right side is youth and life but the left shows the flowers losing their petals and leaves are falling. I painted in blocks of colour inspired by cartoons, colouring books following numbers and stained class windows. Medium: Oils on canvas board Size: Framed - 58 cm x 69 cm

This painting was made during the early and formative years of my career as an artist. I was creating my own style and voice by learning from the masters.  Heavenly Harbour is a sketch and a study for a future painting. It is inspired by and adapted from the work of Italian Masters and artists such as Kim, in terms of composition and features. However it is my own creative message by transforming some of the composition and adding elements. It represents an imagined a paradise and utopia along the Adriatic Coast of Italy and Croatia. It has several symbols to convey the message. The Christian elements are conveyed in the Dove that symbolises the spirit or Christ, the electricity pole is shaped as a cross, the children embracing each other symbolise unconditional love and protection for your family and for humanity. The number 7 by the door  is the sabbath or the day of rest which is emphasised by the parked bicycle and a couple in a boat admiring and contemplating the flowers. Medium: Oils Size: unframed canvas board - 49 cm x 59 cm

This painting was made during the early and formative years of my career as an artist. I was creating my own style and voice by learning from the masters. Venetian Delight is a sketch and a study for a future painting. It is inspired by and adapted from the work of Masters such as Kim and  Canaletto, in terms of composition and features. However it is my own creative message with some transformation of the composition, colour scheme and the addition of elements. It represents an imagined  romantic, but also a realistic scene as a precarious electricity line crosses from end of the canal to another in the distance. It shows the famous Venetian Gondolas with passengers. One of rowers passes the house of his 'inamorata' as she waits by the door to see him. She is his Venetian delight. Above her on the right is the Italian flag which shows the pride and love of the people for their country. The golden cords that tie the boats to the poles depict the splendour and majesty of Venice. This painting was made during the early and formative years of my career as an artist when I was creating my own style and voice. It is a sketch and a study for a future painting. It is inspired by the work of  Civardi,  but is my own creative message, composition and colour scheme. It represents an imagined  farmer's wife. She depicts the hard life these women lead in many rural communities in Italy. The cross, left carelessly on the table, suggests the turning away from religion and a sense of disappointment, loss of hope and fatigue with life. Medium: Colour pencils Size: Framed - 20 cm x 20 cm

This painting was made during the early and formative years of my career as an artist. I was creating my own style and voice by learning from the masters. Playing the Blues is a sketch and a study for a future painting. It is inspired by and adapted from the work of masters such as McCraid (?) and Blanchard, in terms of composition and features. However it is my own creative message by transforming some of the composition, features, and the addition of elements such as the musician. Features changed: the buildings have been simplified; the wall and lamp posts, and the bench has also been changed. The figures remain almost the same. The shapes and colours have been changed. The reflections have also been altered. Playing the Blues represents an imagined  romantic, but also a realistic scene as a musician plays the blues along London's Embankment. He is one of the countless musicians that add life, vibrancy, joy and colour to this part of a London. Medium: Acrylic Size: Framed - 43 cm x 45 cm

This image depicts a lovely, warm sunset from the window of a traditional wooden and stone home. These treasures can still be found in some remote parts of the Mediterranean and Aegean in an effort to preserve the heritage, antiquity, and a bygone time that charm all those who visit. Here I capture the simplicity, yet warmth and hospitality of homes, lives and people that live within, in this beautiful and vibrant part of the world. These are symbolised by the bottle of wine, the pan to cook with and peaches on the table. The hot colour palette reflects the atmosphere, nature and culture of the people and country. This scene captures the a day at Devon, the English Riviera. The title reflects a dream that these two little sisters are having of their coming holiday. I had seen various variations done of this painting, so I couldn't identify who was the original artist. But I loved this image so much when I was trying to develop as an artist that I decided to make my own variation. I added a different background with a lighthouse, changed the the shapes of reflections and sky. One of the things I wanted to do was explore blocks of colour like cartoons and stained glass windows. The image depicts the an orange with a swirling and dancing peel. It is a metaphor living and loving life. I love warm colours.

It is inspired by my studies of the paintings done during the 16th and 17th centuries by Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Zubaran and Nickelsen all who used black and dark backgrounds, and swirling movements to make colours stand out more and provide action. I love the way black makes the colours stand out. I continue to stdy and learn from them in my efforts to be a good artist.
