This painting was made during the early and formative years of my career as an artist when I was creating my own style and voice. It is a sketch and a study for a future painting. It is inspired by the work of Civardi, but is my own creative message, composition and colour scheme. It represents an imagined farmer’s wife. She depicts the hard life these women lead in many rural communities in Italy. The cross, left carelessly on the table, suggests the turning away from religion and a sense of disappointment, loss of hope and fatigue with life.
